Burnaaga-goanna: An epic 28 km trail winding through Wandera wilderness
Wandera Mountain, west of Moruya, is home of Eurobodalla’s main telecommunications infrastructure – and soon to be the starting point of an epic adventure trail which has been named in local dhurga language – Burnaaga, meaning goanna.
Crews have been trying to make the most of the elevation, working from a highpoint of almost 450 metres.
We caught up with Ruben White from Next Level MTB. With a clinometer in hand and fist full of pink tape, he’s had the job of figuring out how to get from Wandera to Mogo through thick scrub, gullies and along mountain ridges. Initially, Ruben said there were 65 water crossings along the way. They’ve managed to reduce them to 15, with six needing bridges.
“There are five main descents which will make up about 40 percent of the trail from the summit of Wandera to the town of Mogo – you also have the option to continue through to Batehaven,” Ruben said.
“The descents will be the real hero sections with rock features, exposure of epic views and some really memorable stuff.”
A shuttle is necessary for this one, and Council has put a callout for interested operators who want the gig. We can expect to see a service setup and taking bookings by the opening.
